How to Install a Hot Water Recirculation System

There’s nothing worse than getting into a cold shower in the morning and waiting for it to warm up. The delay in the arrival of the hot water is due to the distance it must travel from the hot water heater. To minimize this delay, we can use a hot water recirculation system. By installing one of these systems, your family can enjoy instant hot water in the shower, the bathtub, and from any sinks along the plumbing run. In addition, these systems are known to prevent pipe freezing, save water and save energy because of the way they minimize waste of water, and the energy used to heat it. Installing a hot water recirculating system to your existing plumbing is surprisingly easy, and can be completed by the average homeowner in less than an hour.

Things You’ll Need: an Adjustable Wrench, a Screw Driver, a Towel and a hot water recirculating valve kit.

1. Locate the plumbing fixture that is farthest from your hot water heater. Installing the valve at this fixture will minimize energy waste while maximizing hot water to all the fixture along the plumbing circuit .

2. Turn off both the water supply valves to the fixture (hot and cold water valves at the fixture you have selected for installation).

3. Remove the existing water lines that connect the hot and cold shut-off valves to your faucet.

4. Install the hot water recirculation valve by: connecting one end of the flexible cold water line (supplied with your kit) to your cold water shut-off valve and the other end to the cold water side of your faucet; and by connecting one end of the flexible hot water line (supplied with your kit) to your hot water shut-off valve and the other end to the hot water side of your faucet. These connections are screw together-type connections and self sealing (not requiring soldering or pipe compound).

5. Set the control knob to your desired temperature and turn on your hot and cold supply lines. That’s it…you now have instant hot water at your fixtures.

Prevent Your Pipes From Freezing:

The best solution to preventing your pipes from freezing is to simply install innovative and patented technology known as a “temperature controlled hot water recirculating valve” (is a breeze-no pipe cutting, soldering or electrical connections). It uses your existing water pipes and the thermal convection generated by your water heater to circulate the water back to your water heater for reheating (not requiring a pump or any electricity).
